Vehicle Projects LLC Announces Contract to Develop Fuelcell Powerplant for Rail Applications
Development of a complete 150-kW fuelcell powerplant for an offshore railway research organization is under contract with delivery scheduled for January 2006
20 September 2005
Denver, Colorado, USA – Vehicle Projects LLC of Denver, Colorado, USA, announced the signing of a contract to develop a 150-kW fuelcell powerplant as a prototype powerplant for an advanced rail-vehicle under development by an offshore railway research organization. The proton-exchange-membrane (PEM) fuelcell powerplant will be delivered in January 2006 and will utilize the new FORZATM power modules of Nuvera Fuel Cells (Cambridge, USA, and Milan, Italy), a long-term business associate of Vehicle Projects LLC.
According to Vehicle Projects, PEM fuelcell-powered locomotives will combine the best advantages of the two contemporary types of locomotive power: catenary-electric and diesel-electric power. They will be more efficient and have lower infrastructure costs than catenary-electrics and will be cleaner and quieter than diesel-electrics.
“We continue to use Nuvera fuelcell stacks and power modules in our advanced vehicles because of the ruggedness of their metal bipolar plates and the simplicity and compactness of their direct-water-injection system of cooling and membrane humidification,” said Dr. Arnold Miller, President of Vehicle Projects. “Steel-wheel-on-steel-rail applications are subject to extreme shock and vibration, and our experience with Nuvera stacks in the earlier mine locomotive has demonstrated that metal plates are up to the task.”
“This initiative marks the fourth time Nuvera and Vehicle Projects have teamed up to provide a fuelcell solution for industrial vehicles,” said Prashant Chintawar, Executive Director at Nuvera. “We appreciate Vehicle Projects’ ongoing efforts to advance new technologies that offer clean energy alternatives to the world.”
Vehicle Projects LLC conceives, organizes, funds, and manages multi-institutional, international projects to develop and demonstrate prototype industrial fuelcell vehicles. Its completed or ongoing projects – for the underground mining and railway industries – include development of a fuelcell-powered underground mine locomotive, a fuelcell-battery hybrid mine loader, and a 1.2-MW road-switcher locomotive for commercial and military railway applications.
